The Project

The aim of the project was to develop a prototype for a lightweight solar-powered vehicle, which will allow for 100% carbon emission free travelling. The product is based on a three-wheel recumbent bicycle frame (so technically a trike), which allows for pedalling as an additional form of power.
The aim was to produce a product that was as low-impact as possible, and that made use of as much recycled, reused, and environmentally-friendly materials as possible.
The project won the National Science and Engineering Competition, and Shawn Brown now holds the title of 'UK Young Engineer of the Year 2010'!

The Bike won the 2010 National Science and Engineering Competition! Over 150 engineers were participating, and these were narrowed down to 5 finalists. The 5 were then put into a Dragon's Den celebrity judging event, and judged on their projects and suitability for the prestigious position (as an ambassador for engineering). The results were then announced at a glitzy award ceremony, at which Lord Mandelson awarded the top prizes, and Shawn walked away with the main prize!
